Book Review:
IT Systems Management by Rich Scheisser from Prentice hall publishing
is a textbook aimed at people going into IT management. Some sections
are relevent to systems administrators, while the book is not too useful
for software & hardware developers.
The book deals with issues such as, management support, structuring an IT
infrastructure, management, staffing, robust process development and other
matters that an IT manager will confront.
Some technical matters are discussed from a management perspective, including
availability, performance, production acceptance, change management,
configuration management, storage, networking, capacity planning, and security.
The ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library) is a framework
for IT infrastructure and has been gaining use throughout the industry.
This chapter covers many of the misconceptions about ITIL.
A senior systems administrator will likely find the management perspective of
the technical topics interesting as well as the ITIL & Business continuity
chapters.
Throughout the book, case studies are shared. These studies are an interesting
read.
